Sidemen Trekking: A Walk from a Different Perspective (Ubud)
Full description
This is a 2-hour experience from Ubud, built around Pasar Sidemen (Sidemen Traditional Market), Hidden gem and Jembatan Kuning Tukad Yeh Unda. It is run by SIDEMEN TREKKING, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
East Bali is the quieter side of the island under Mount Agung. The Sidemen valley has rice terraces without the crowds of Tegallalang and a view straight up to the volcano; Tirta Gangga is a water palace built by the last raja of Karangasem in 1946, with stepping stones across a carp pond; Taman Ujung is the same family's earlier palace of 1919 on the coast. Besakih, the mother temple, is a complex of 23 temples at 1,000 metres on Agung's slope and needs a sarong and, since 2023, an official guide. Further round the coast, Amed has black-sand beaches and Tulamben has the USAT Liberty, a cargo ship torpedoed in 1942 and pushed into the sea by Agung's 1963 eruption, now a wreck dive and snorkel from the beach.
The price covers Guide and Bottled water. It does not cover Hotel pickup and drop-off and Tips, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Toko Upa Boga Pertenunan. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with SIDEMEN TREKKING before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Our tour was wonderful! Our guide Dara (not sure how to spell his name) was very kind and told us a lot about his local village, the rice fields, the evolution of sidemen, etc. Highly recommend this tour!
An absolutely unforgettable experience! The trekking through Sidemen was incredible, offering breathtaking views, beautiful rice terraces and a wonderfully authentic glimpse of Bali away from the busy tourist areas. The route was stunning, and every moment felt like discovering a different side of the island. Our guide was fantastic — knowledgeable, friendly and genuinely passionate about the area. The walk was go between the rice field and follow the irrigation system. The landscape are amazing. We had a great time !
Amazing trekking to discover Sidemen! Highly recommended
Great trek around the rice fields. Very knowledgeable guide!
We had an amazing time with our guide. He was very nice, knowledgeable and friendly. He even speaks some words of French and other languages. The trekking experience was also amazing, with a very relaxed and easy pace as well as breathtaking views of traditional villages and rice fields. I would recommend 100%, it was definitely a great and amusing way to spend the afternoon!
We met up with our guide and his nephew bright and early to start our trek. They had water bottles prepared for us. We then proceeded to take a 2 hour walk around the rice fields with some good explanations about what we were seeing. We got to see the different stages of the rice fields from young to mature. I recommend doing this trek to see the beautiful Sidemen scenery!
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny. Great easy pace and beautiful views. Very affordable way to spend the morning.
We had a wonderful experience exploring the rice terraces in Sidemen with our guide. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and our guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive throughout the activity. He took the time to explain the local culture, the rice terraces and the way of life in the area. The walk was very enjoyable and allowed us to discover Sidemen in a more authentic way. We highly recommend this experience, especially if you want to discover the beautiful landscapes of Sidemen with a local guide. 🌿✨
The tour was excellent. Interesting, easy meetup instructions in the confirmation email, and a great guide. Adi is local with a great sense of humour and his lived experience tells the story of the village really well. If you have reasonable fitness the walk is easy. It ends some distance from the starting point as they say it does. There is a nice little rooftop warung at the end which was a great place to take a break and look back over the valley the walk takes you through. I am 61 and walked back to the starting point to collect my motorcycle no problem.
Perfect and knowledgeable guide, very friendly, with excellent explanations of the region and local farming practices. The tour is spectacular, the views are amazing, and having someone from one of the local villages showing you around also leads to many special and warm encounters with locals. This was among the best guided tours we have ever experienced.
Daria was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide who made the walk through Sidemen rice terraces very interesting. The pace was very good and adapted to everyone in the small group (7 people). I appreciated the walk being in a part of the rice terraces with less tourists, it was super peaceful. Thank you!
