A Balinese village day is about the compound and the rice cycle. A family compound is a walled group of pavilions around a household temple, laid out to a fixed pattern with the shrine to the mountain side; the kitchen and the rice barn have their own places in it. Around it the paddies run on the subak calendar, planting, flooding, harvesting and drying on the road, and the fields are worked by hand and by hand tractor. Mornings start early: the market at dawn, the offerings, breakfast of rice and coffee.
