Tour Itinerary
The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
Ziggurat of Aqar Quf (ancient Dur-Kurigalzu)
Ziggurat of Aqar Quf (ancient Dur-Kurigalzu), built in the 14th century BCE by the Kassite king Kurigalzu I. Rising approximately 52 meters in antiquity, this mudbrick structure functioned as a religious and administrative anchor of a purpose-built royal city. Unlike reconstructed sites, Aqar Quf preserves original brick cores stamped with Kassite inscriptions, offering direct material continuity with Bronze Age Mesopotamia.
Al-Kadhimiya Shrine
Al-Kadhimiya Shrine, burial site of Imam Musa al-Kadhim (d. 799 CE) and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (d. 835 CE). The shrine’s golden domes and Safavid-Ottoman architectural layers reflect centuries of devotional patronage. Pilgrimage studies confirm that sacred architecture intensifies emotional memory encoding, meaning visitors retain stronger, longer-lasting impressions.
Old town
On Al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad’s historic literary artery since the Abbasid era, visitors engage with living intellectual culture. The adjacent Al-Mustansiriya Madrasa, founded in 1227 CE by Caliph al-Mustansir, represents one of the earliest organized university models in the Islamic world. The nearby Abbasid Palace preserves late Abbasid brick ornamentation, demonstrating advanced geometric articulation. Tea at Shabandar Café connects visitors to a century-old intellectual meeting place.
Taq kesra
Finally, Taq Kasra, the 6th-century Sasanian arch at Ctesiphon, spans approximately 37 meters with a height near 30 meters — still the largest single-span unreinforced brick vault in the world.
