The northern foot of Mt. Fuji has a well-worn circuit: the 5th Station car park, the Kachi Kachi ropeway, the Wind and Ice Caves, a shopping complex, back on the bus. It is not that those places are bad, but on a busy day they can hand you the mountain through a crowd. This tour is built as the deliberate opposite. Taka, whose full name is Takahisa Hosoya and who has been based in Fuji-Kawaguchiko since 2010, drives a small van to the places he actually uses himself, and the route is agreed with you rather than issued to you.
What that means in practice varies with the season, the light and how much time you have booked. Recurring stops include a quiet shrine standing among cedars a thousand years old, the kind of place where the scale of the trees does more work than any signboard; lake and mountain viewpoints angled away from the tripod crowds; a waterfall; lakeside parks; and stretches of forest and lava cave. Mt. Fuji is an active stratovolcano and its last eruption, in 1707, is recent enough to still be shaping the ground here, so the caves and the forest floor are not scenery so much as evidence.
There is no fixed stop sequence published, and that is intentional. Fuji shows itself on its own schedule, and a guide who lives here can read the cloud in the morning and reorder the day around it, which a printed itinerary cannot. Expect photography stops, glimpses of ordinary local life in the villages below the mountain, and a running commentary on the region from someone with fifteen years of it. Fuji was inscribed by UNESCO in 2013 as a cultural site rather than a natural one, listed for its long hold on Japanese art and pilgrimage, and that framing suits this tour well.
The tour is sold by duration. Eight hours is the full day, and shorter three, four, five, six and seven-hour versions exist for travellers passing through on a tighter schedule. Operating hours run 6:00 to 17:00 daily, tightening to 6:30 to 16:00 in winter, and you name your own start point in the Kawaguchiko or Fuji-Yoshida area when you book.
The rate is charged per vehicle, not per head. One traveller and six travellers pay the same total, which makes this unusually good value for a family or a group of friends and simply a well-priced private day for a couple. Included are the guide, the van, the concierge advice before and during the day, and taxes. Road tolls, parking, entrance fees to any site you choose to go inside, insurance and personal spending are settled separately.
