Hakone in a Day from Tokyo: Lake Ashi Cruise, Owakudani Ropeway, Museum and Onsen

Hakone is a collapsed volcanic caldera about ninety minutes southwest of Tokyo, and almost everything that makes it worth a day of your trip is a consequence of that geology: the steam still rising off the hillsides, the sulphurous water piped into bathhouses, the lake filling the crater floor. This is a private day out with an English-speaking guide and a car, which matters more here than it does in a city. Hakone's own transport network is charming and slow, and a group that has to catch the last train back is a group that spends the afternoon watching the clock rather than the mountain.

The day begins with a pickup from your hotel, apartment or station anywhere in Tokyo's 23 wards, typically between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning, and it is genuinely door to door. Fuel, expressway tolls and parking are all folded into the price, the vehicle carries Wi-Fi and bottled water, and the guide will rearrange the running order on the day if the weather or your own energy suggests it. Roughly eleven hours pass between leaving your door and returning to it.

On the ground the day gathers the classic Hakone set pieces. A sightseeing boat crosses Lake Ashi, which sits in the caldera itself and, on a clear morning, holds a reflection of Mt. Fuji at its northern end. The Hakone Ropeway then lifts you over Owakudani, the active vent field left by an eruption some three thousand years ago, where sulphur stains the ground yellow and eggs boiled in the springs turn black and are sold by the bagful. From there you choose between the Hakone Open-Air Museum, which has scattered large-scale sculpture across a hillside since 1969 and holds a substantial Picasso collection, or the Venetian Glass Museum with its Murano pieces and glass-strung garden.

Lunch is taken locally, and the day closes in the water. Depending on what suits your group, that means either YUNESSUN, a swimsuit-friendly hot-spring complex with novelty baths that families and mixed-gender parties tend to prefer, or Mori no Yu, the traditional nude bathing side of the same resort. Your guide will explain the etiquette before you go in, which is the part most first-time visitors actually want help with.

Pricing here is per group rather than per traveller. The rate covers the vehicle, the driver and the guide for the whole party, so a couple and a family of five booking the same bracket pay exactly the same total, and larger parties step up through published brackets to a maximum of twenty. Attraction tickets, meals and any swimwear rental are paid on the day, and the itinerary is coordinated with you in advance rather than handed to you fixed.
