Private Hakone Day with a Government-Licensed Guide: Owakudani, Lake Ashinoko and the Lakeside Torii

Hakone rewards a guide more than most Japanese destinations, because getting around it is a puzzle. The classic loop strings together a mountain railway, a funicular, a ropeway, a lake boat and a bus, and each leg runs to its own timetable. A licensed guide who knows those timetables turns a day of anxious platform-watching into a walk. Japan's national guide-interpreter licence is a state qualification: candidates sit examinations in language, Japanese history, geography and general knowledge before they can work under the title. That shows up in the day less as a recital of dates than as context. Why the Tokaido road came over this pass, why the shogunate placed a checkpoint here to control movement between Kyoto and Edo, why a caldera produces both the hot springs the town lives on and the bare sulphur ground above it.

Most itineraries take in Owakudani, the vent field on the flank of the old volcano. The ground there is stripped to grey and yellow, steam rises continuously from fissures, and the smell of sulphur is unmistakable. Eggs boiled in the hot pools come out with blackened shells, and eating one is said locally to add seven years to your life. It is the most direct reminder that this is a working volcano, not a scenic backdrop.

From the ropeway the route usually drops to Lake Ashinoko, the water filling the caldera floor. On the southern shore the torii gate associated with the shrine precinct stands out in the shallows, with Kuzuryu Shrine, dedicated to a nine-headed dragon of local legend, in the woods nearby. On a clear day Mount Fuji sits directly beyond the far rim, the composition that Hiroshige and generations of print-makers returned to.

Because the day is yours, it flexes. Add the Hakone Open-Air Museum, which has been showing sculpture across a hillside since 1969 and holds a substantial Picasso collection. Walk a section of the old cedar avenue and stone-paved Hakone Hachiri, the Edo-period road over the pass. Stop at the reconstructed checkpoint. Or slow the whole thing down and spend longer in fewer places. Tell your guide what you want when you meet and the day is rebuilt around it.
