Yosegi zaiku is Hakone's own craft, and it is stranger than it first appears. The geometric patterns look printed or inlaid piece by piece; in fact they are constructed. The maker glues together long rods of different woods, chosen purely for their natural colour, into a bundle whose cross-section forms a single unit of the pattern. That bundle is then combined with others into a larger block, and the block is finally shaved into sheets thin enough to see light through. Every sheet carries the whole design. Nothing is dyed and nothing is drawn.
The craft grew up in Hatajuku, a village on the old Tokaido road over the Hakone pass, in the early nineteenth century. Travellers walking between Kyoto and Edo stopped here, and a portable, beautiful, inexpensive souvenir was exactly what the traffic wanted. The mountains supplied the raw material: this stretch of Kanagawa carries an unusual range of tree species, and the palette in the patterns, from pale spindle to dark walnut and warm keyaki, is simply what grows on these slopes.
The session begins at Hakone-Yumoto Station, from where a short bus ride takes you up to the workshop. There you get the history first, then the material itself: the rods, the glued blocks, and the plane used to shave off the veneer sheets in a single continuous curl. Watching a craftsman take that shaving is the part most people remember. It looks effortless and is not; the blade has to be set to fractions of a millimetre and the block has to be perfectly true.
Then you make something. The hands-on portion is designed for people who have never touched a plane or a marquetry block before, with the guide translating and the studio's craftsman correcting as you go. You leave with your own finished piece, which is a considerably better souvenir than the mass-produced versions sold in the station shops below.
It is a short, indoor, weather-proof activity, which makes it a sensible companion to a Hakone trip built around the ropeway and the lake, both of which can be spoiled by cloud. It also travels well as an idea: yosegi zaiku is the craft behind the famous Hakone puzzle boxes, and once you have seen how the patterns are assembled you notice them everywhere in the region.
