Izu Scenic Coast Day Trip
Izu and Mount Fuji, Two Days with an Onsen Night
Full description
Almost every day trip south of Tokyo goes to Hakone or Kamakura. Izu is further, quieter and geologically stranger, and it is the reason to take this one instead of a fifth version of the Fuji lakes.
Mount Omuro is the first stop and it looks wrong in the best way: a perfectly symmetrical inverted-bowl volcano, 580 metres high, covered entirely in grass because the whole surface is burned off once a year in a controlled fire that has been repeated for seven centuries. A chairlift runs to the rim, and from the top you get a 360-degree view over Fuji on one side and the Izu Islands scattered out to sea on the other.
The Jogasaki Coast follows. This is where a lava flow from Omuro met the Pacific and cooled into columnar cliffs, and the Kadowaki suspension bridge is strung across a gap in them, forty-eight metres of walkway with the sea moving underneath. It is more exciting than the photographs suggest.
Shuzenji closes the day — an onsen town on a river gorge with red bridges, a bamboo path and a temple founded in the ninth century, and enough charm that it is routinely called a Little Kyoto.
Hotel pickup is included within Tokyo's four central wards — Shinjuku, Chiyoda, Chuo and Taito — with a designated meeting point arranged for anyone staying outside them. Pickup falls between 08:00 and 08:45 and is confirmed the day before, since this is a shared vehicle.
Meals are not included. A two-day version exists that adds an overnight with breakfast on a twin-share basis, which is the better choice if you want to soak in Shuzenji properly rather than pass through it.
