Getting from Kawaguchiko to Hakone by public transport is one of the more frustrating legs in central Japan. There is no direct line. The usual answer is a bus to Gotemba, a wait, a change, and another bus, with suitcases in tow and most of a day gone. This tour takes that same journey, puts it in a private vehicle with an English-speaking guide, and fills the hours with places worth stopping for.
It is also a genuinely interesting piece of geography. You begin in the alpine basin on Fuji's northern side, cross a mountain pass, and descend into an entirely different volcanic landscape: Hakone is a caldera, the collapsed remnant of a much older volcano, and the change in terrain and vegetation as you come over the ridge is obvious from the car window.
The first stop is Oshino Hakkai, a village of eight ponds at Fuji's foot fed by snowmelt that has filtered down through the mountain's porous lava over decades. The water arrives startlingly clear and cold. From there the route turns to Ninooka Shrine, a small sanctuary in the forest that receives almost no foreign visitors and offers a very different register — moss, cedar, and quiet. Lunch is your choice of two: Fukunoya for handmade soba, or Toraya Kobo, where wagashi sweets are served in a bamboo garden.
The last stop is the arrival, and it is timed deliberately. Ashinoko Observation Park sits high above Lake Ashi, the caldera lake that Hakone is built around, with a full circle of view taking in the water, the surrounding rim and — when the air is clear — Fuji itself standing behind it. You see the whole shape of where you are staying before you check in, which changes how the rest of your time in Hakone reads.
Practically: this is a one-way private transfer, four hours door to door, ending at your Hakone hotel or ryokan rather than at a station. Your luggage travels with you and there are no transfers or waiting.
