Mount Fuji stands 3,776 metres above sea level and is an active stratovolcano, though it has been quiet since the Hoei eruption of 1707, which blew out the crater still visible on the southeastern flank. Photographs suggest it is easy to see. In practice the mountain hides for much of the year, and the difference between a good Fuji day and a wasted one usually comes down to knowing which side to be on and when. Having a private car and a guide who watches the forecast is the most reliable fix.
This is a full day out of Tokyo, door to door from your hotel lobby, covering the northern approaches on the Yamanashi side. The first stop is normally Chureito Pagoda in Arakurayama Sengen Park above Fujiyoshida, reached by around four hundred steps. The view from the terrace — pagoda, town, and the cone behind — is the single most recognisable image of Japan produced anywhere, and it is worth arriving early enough to have a little room on the platform.
From there the day moves to Lake Kawaguchiko, the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes, where the northern shore gives an open sightline across the water with nothing in the way. The Kachi Kachi Ropeway lifts you from the lakeside up Mount Tenjo in a few minutes for a wider view over the lake and the whole basin. Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine follows: a cedar avenue and a torii that marked the formal start of the Yoshida pilgrimage route for centuries, and the reason Fuji's 2013 UNESCO listing was made as a cultural site rather than a natural one. The day closes at Oshino Hakkai, eight ponds fed by snowmelt that has spent decades filtering down through the mountain's lava.
Because the tour is private and the vehicle is yours for the day, the order is not fixed. Your guide will reshuffle stops around cloud, traffic and your own pace, and will happily swap something out if you would rather spend longer somewhere. October to February gives the clearest air and the highest chance of an unobstructed mountain; summer often means haze even on a fine day.
On cost: this is a per-group rate covering the whole party of up to six guests, not a per-person fare, so six travellers pay the same total as two and simply divide it further. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Tokyo and the guide's own expenses are included. Entrance fees, the ropeway ticket and lunch for both you and your guide are not — bring cash in yen for those.
