Mount Fuji Signature Private Day Tour from Kawaguchiko in Hakone

Mount Fuji is a 3,776-metre stratovolcano that has been painted, written about and walked toward for centuries, and in 2013 UNESCO listed it as a cultural site rather than a natural one — recognition of what the mountain has meant to Japanese art and pilgrimage rather than of the rock itself. The catch, for anyone who travels a long way to see it, is that Fuji spends a great deal of the year behind cloud. This tour is built around that problem. Your guide reads the morning's conditions and light before deciding the order of the day, chasing the angles where the summit is most likely to stand clear.

The day is put together from two halves of the operator's repertoire: the sights people arrive already wanting to see, and the quieter corners they would never find alone. Chureito Pagoda, the five-storeyed hall in Arakurayama Sengen Park above Fujiyoshida, is the first kind — roughly four hundred steps above the town, and the source of the single most reproduced view of the mountain in existence. Oshino Hakkai is the second: eight ponds fed by snowmelt that has spent decades percolating down through Fuji's lava beds, arriving so clear you can count the stones on the bottom. Sengen Shrine, in its stand of old cedars, marks the historic starting point of the pilgrimage route up the north face.

The rest of the route flexes. Nagasaki Park and Oishi Park both sit on the shore of Lake Kawaguchiko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, and both give a long open sightline across the water to the mountain with almost nothing in the way. Depending on weather and time, your guide may add Haha no Shirataki Falls, the Fugaku Wind Cave, the lava tube known locally as the Dragon Cave, or the thatched-roof village of Saiko Iyashi no Sato. Six or seven stops is a normal day.

The operator describes the approach as omakase — you hand the shape of the day to the guide the way you would hand a meal to a chef. Yuka or Lewis will be leading, both guiding in English, and both are willing to take specific requests if you send them in advance. What they ask in return is a little trust when they change the plan at 11am because the cloud has shifted.

On pricing: this is a genuinely private tour and the rate covers the whole party rather than each traveller, so a couple and a group of four pay exactly the same total. From the fifth guest onwards a per-head supplement applies, and parties of eight or more need to be arranged by enquiry. Pickup is from your accommodation, but only within the Fujikawaguchiko area — this is not a tour that starts in Tokyo. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant and paid for separately, and the tour does not go up to the Fuji 5th Station.
