Mount Hoei Crater Day Trek on the Volcanic Flank of Fuji in Hakone

In December 1707 Mount Fuji erupted for the last time, tearing a set of craters into its southeastern flank and dusting Edo, eighty miles away, with ash. The rim of that eruption is Mount Hoei, at 2,693m the second highest point on the mountain, and this day trek walks straight into it. Where the summit climb is about altitude and endurance, this is about seeing what a volcano actually does: raw lava flows, loose cinder slopes, and a crater wall that has barely begun to grow anything back after three centuries.

The route covers about 7.2km, starting from the Fujinomiya basecamp at 2,400m and climbing to the Hoei summit at 2,693m. Four to five hours of walking gets you there and back, with the ground alternating between compacted trail and stretches of exposed rock and volcanic gravel that shifts underfoot. Lunch, a Japanese bento, is eaten at the top. The view from the summit runs through roughly 280 degrees: the Hakone caldera to the east, Lake Yamanaka among the Fuji Five Lakes to the north, the Pacific coastline to the south, and behind you the full grey bulk of Fuji rising toward the summit cone.

The great practical advantage of Hoei is its season. Fuji's official climbing window is barely nine weeks long, from early July to early September, and outside it the huts shut and the mountain becomes genuinely hazardous. This trek runs from mid-May to mid-November, which means you can walk high on Fuji in the clear air of late autumn or early summer, when the crowds have gone and visibility is at its best.

It is honest to call this an intermediate hike rather than an easy one. You are above 2,400m for the whole walk, the volcanic gravel is tiring and unstable in places, and exposed sections catch the wind. There is no scrambling and no technical difficulty, and regular walkers in reasonable health handle it comfortably, but it is a real mountain day rather than a scenic stroll. Guides are professional English-speaking mountain guides and the group is capped at eight.

Logistics are unusually well covered. The day runs roughly 08:30 to 17:00 door to door, with free pickup at Gotemba Station or Fuji Mountain Coffee on the group departure, or hotel pickup around Kawaguchiko, Hakone and Gotemba on a private booking. All the essential hiking equipment, including boots and waterproof layers, is lent at no extra charge, so you do not need to fly to Japan with a rucksack of mountain kit. Pricing is per person on the group departure, which needs a minimum of two travellers; a private version is available on a sliding per-person scale that gets cheaper as the party grows. Only personal items such as a hat, sunglasses and your own medication are left to you.
