Miyajima has been considered sacred for so long that for centuries ordinary people were not permitted to set foot on it, which is why Itsukushima Shrine was built out over the water in the first place. This two-hour walk with a local history expert from F and five starts from the Miyajima ferry terminal and unpacks that sacred past piece by piece. The route eases in along Omotesando shopping street, where you have time to browse and watch the island's famous deer work the crowds, before turning toward the shoreline for the tour's centerpiece: the great vermilion torii gate that appears to float on the tide, and the story of why it stands in the sea rather than on land. You then spend a full forty minutes inside Itsukushima Shrine itself, walking its boardwalk corridors above the water while your guide explains the architecture, the rituals and the aristocratic Heian-era world that shaped it. Leo was very knowledgeable about the history of the island, the shrine and temple we visited. He has a lot of interesting anecdotes, and can give recommendations about what to try for food and drink (I did try the lemon soda and it was very good). We saw some deers, they were so sweet.
