Inuyama Castle & Nakasendo Post Towns Day Trip from Nagoya

This full-day tour leaves central Nagoya for Inuyama Castle, about an hour away by coach, and one of only twelve castles in Japan that still has its original wooden keep standing from the feudal era. Unlike Nagoya's own castle, which was rebuilt in concrete after being destroyed in the Second World War, Inuyama's keep survives largely as it was built, and it is registered as one of Japan's National Treasures. A guided visit takes you through the castle's steep wooden staircases and narrow corridors up to the top floor, where the view stretches over the Kiso River and the surrounding hills.

From Inuyama, the group continues to Enakyo, a gorge along the Kiso River known for its dramatic rock formations and, depending on the season, autumn foliage or fresh greenery, before a short sightseeing stop. The tour then heads into the mountains to Tsumago-juku, one of the best-preserved Edo-period post towns on the old Nakasendo trade route that once connected Kyoto and Edo, modern Tokyo. Traditional wooden buildings line its car-free main street, and the town has deliberately kept overhead wires and modern signage out of view to preserve its historic atmosphere, giving visitors a rare, tangible sense of what a Japanese trading town looked like two centuries ago.

The day runs by coach, with several hours of driving built into the roughly ten-hour itinerary, so expect a full but unhurried day rather than a rushed checklist.
