Full description

Calligraphy is a good thing to do in the middle of a travel day, which is exactly how this session is designed. Two hours, in central Sakae, at either 10:00 or 15:00, in a room where the pace is deliberately slow and there is tea.

A calligraphy master teaches. The first part is mechanical and matters more than it sounds: how to hold the brush upright, how much ink it should carry, how pressure changes the width of a stroke, and why the movement comes from the arm rather than the fingers. Get those wrong and nothing after them works.

Once the brush stops feeling strange, you write. Most people start with a kanji chosen for its meaning and end up working on their own name, which is the piece that tends to come home framed.

What makes this version better than a quick demonstration is the time and the tea. Japanese tea and traditional sweets are served during the session, and the two hours leave room to make mistakes, rest, look at what you did, and try again — which is how the practice is actually meant to work. Calligraphy has been treated as a meditative discipline for centuries and it only functions as one if you are not rushed.

Instruction is in English throughout, materials are provided, and the group caps at ten. No experience is expected; most people in the room have never held a brush.

The studio is on the sixth floor of a building in Sakae, past the Lawson — easy to drop into between other plans in central Nagoya.
