Full description
Nagoya is Japan's fourth-largest city and the industrial heart of the Chubu region, home to Toyota's headquarters in nearby Toyota City, but a short bus ride north takes you into an entirely different Japan. This full-day excursion departs from central Nagoya and threads together three of the region's most storied mountain settlements, each preserved in its own distinct way against the pull of modern development, making for a long but rewarding day away from the city.
The route starts in Gujo, a castle town built along the clear waters of the Yoshida River, giving you an hour to wander before continuing on to Hida-Takayama, a preserved Edo-period merchant town in the Japanese Alps known for its old wooden storefronts, sake breweries, and morning markets. You'll have a full two hours here to explore its lantern-lit streets at your own pace. The day's final and most iconic stop is Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village of steep thatched-roof gassho-zukuri farmhouses, engineered over centuries of heavy mountain snowfall to shed the weight of winter snow.
This is a long day on the road, with roughly five hours of driving folded into an eleven-hour itinerary, so expect generous free time at each stop rather than a tightly guided walkthrough. It suits travelers who want to see three very different faces of rural Japan in a single trip and don't mind an early departure and a late return to Nagoya.

Detailed Itinerary
Bring comfortable walking shoes, as each village stop involves uneven traditional streets. Most of the day is free time rather than a guided walkthrough, so pace yourself and keep track of the departure times at each stop. Cash is useful for snacks and souvenirs in Gujo and Takayama.

This was an interesting trip to see three very different traditional towns. The pacing was very good..enough time at each place without being rushed. This was not a very large group so we weren’t crowded. The guide John Lee took very good care in ensuring everyone was present and everyone knew the meeting times. I really appreciated that he contacted me prior to the trip with pictures and explicit directions to the meeting site. I was glad to see a side of Japan distinct from Tokyo. All three had their charm and this trip was an excellent opportunity to get to see them.
A very nice experience to easily discover the Japanese Alps from Nagoya when you don't have a car. The time allowed at each stop is sufficient to visit a good number of the places. Our live guide was really very friendly! We were able to take part in an interesting guided tour of Gujo Hachiman with her. She also gave very good advice about the remarkable places to see in Takayama and Shirakawa-go, and her explanations were clear. The village of Shirakawa-go was truly a feast for the eyes!! Thank you very much for this day! :)
Probably the best option to visit Takayama and Shirakawa-go while in Nagoya. We didn't use a guided tour, treating the trip as a means of transportation between things to do. Everything was OK.

She explained everything very clearly before each stop and guided us perfectly on site. Thanks to her, we had a great day. The bus was very comfortable, and Shirakawa-go was simply stunning. Great trip! I feel I had just enough time to see everything I wanted. There wasn't much commentary at all from the guide but I didn't mind. I mostly wanted the transportation anyway. The day went smoothly and the site were very special.

An absolutely beautiful tour in the Japanese mountains that allowed us to see these wonders even with little time. I will try to go back for a longer stay. If you love nature and traditional villages, don't hesitate! The very pleasant live guide switched between English and Chinese to explain everything to the different participants. One of my best souvenirs from this trip.
