Full description
Most kimono rentals hand you a garment and send you into the street. This one is a guided half-day, which changes what you get out of it: the castle admission is included, someone explains what you are looking at, and your photographs are taken by a person rather than a tripod.
It starts at the rental office in Sakae, the centre of Nagoya, at 9:30. You choose from a full collection — kimono and obi in a range of colours and patterns, mixed and matched, with a handbag and hair accessories included. Dressing is done for you, which takes a while and is worth watching.
Then Nagoya Castle, five minutes away by subway. The castle is one of the great Tokugawa fortresses and its Honmaru Palace has been meticulously reconstructed with the original painted screens reproduced — an interior far more impressive than the exterior suggests. Your guide covers what the castle meant to the region and how Nagoya's history differs from Kyoto's and Edo's, which is the part a self-guided kimono walk cannot give you.
The route finishes along Hisaya Odori, the tree-lined central boulevard sometimes called Japan's Champs-Élysées, with time for photographs.
Things to plan for: shoes and hair styling are extra, public transport fares are your own, and the day is four and a half hours in traditional footwear — comfortable, but not nothing. Groups cap at ten.
