Osu is Nagoya's version of Akihabara crossed with a covered market: several hundred metres of arcade selling second-hand clothes, electronics, anime goods, street food and antiques, anchored by a temple. It is the most enjoyable shopping district in the city and considerably less polished than Tokyo's equivalent, which is the point.
The maid cafe here belongs to the chain that started in Akihabara and has since spread across Japan. The format is unchanged and entirely sincere: you are greeted as a guest of the house rather than a customer, staff hold the frame throughout, and there is a ritual — the omajinai, magic words chanted over your food — that guests are expected to join in with.
It is interactive theatre with a drink. Not adult, not a bar, and family-friendly. What separates a good hour from an awkward one is entirely whether you are willing to play along.
