Most samurai museums show you weapons. The Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya shows you a household — the possessions of the Owari branch, the senior of the three Tokugawa houses, kept together since the Edo period rather than assembled by collectors afterwards. That continuity is what makes it unusual: these are the objects one family actually owned and used.
The swords and armour are there, and they are exceptional. But the collection's real argument is about what happened to the warrior class once the fighting stopped. The Tokugawa shogunate held Japan at peace for two and a half centuries, and the men who had been battlefield commanders became administrators, patrons and connoisseurs. You see that transformation in the objects: tea utensils chosen with obsessive care, Noh costumes and instruments, painted screens, lacquered furnishings, and wedding trousseaus assembled at a scale that is difficult to comprehend.
