3-Day Private Alps Route: Nagoya to Tokyo via Shirakawa-go & Nagano

IMPORTANT: this is a one-way, multi-day private journey that begins in Nagoya and ends in Tokyo — you will not be brought back to Nagoya, so plan your onward travel or return flight from the Tokyo end. Traveling by private charter vehicle with your own group only, the three days cut through the mountainous heart of Central Japan rather than following the coastal Shinkansen route most visitors take between the two cities.

Day one leaves Nagoya for Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage village of steep thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses built to shed heavy mountain snow, before continuing to the coastal city of Toyama for the first overnight stop. Day two heads into the Northern Japan Alps to Hakuba, a well-known ski resort town framed by dramatic peaks, then on to Nagano, a city built up around its historic Zenko-ji temple complex and known as a gateway to the surrounding highlands, for the second night.

The final day traces a stretch of the old Nakasendo, one of five official trade routes of the Edo period that linked Edo (modern Tokyo) with Kyoto through the mountains, stopping in Narai-juku, one of the route's best-preserved post towns, before visiting Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's few original wooden castle keeps, and its adjoining Nakamachi Street. The private vehicle then continues on to Tokyo, arriving in the evening as the tour concludes there. Because the group travels privately, the pace can flex around photo stops, meals, and rest breaks throughout all three days.
