Full description

The Blue Pond at Biei is a genuine accident. It was created in the 1980s as part of a mudflow control system after Mount Tokachi erupted, and the water turned that improbable cobalt because minerals leaching from a nearby hot spring react with the aluminium in the runoff. Apple shipped a photograph of it as a default Mac wallpaper, which is how most people have seen it without knowing where it is.

This day covers it along with the rest of what makes central Hokkaido look unlike anywhere else in Japan. Shirahige Falls, where water emerges directly from a cliff face rather than flowing over the top, running the same cobalt colour into the gorge below. The Roller Coaster Road, a straight run of steep rises through farmland that you pass along. And Shikisai-no-Oka in Furano — fifteen hectares of banded flower fields planted in strips across a hillside, with admission included in your ticket.

The scale of the Hokkaido landscape is the real subject. It was settled late, on a grid, with American agricultural advice, and it feels more like the northern United States than the rest of Japan.

Four ways to take it. The bus group is the cheapest and meets at Sapporo Station's north exit bus terminal at 8:00. Small-group van options add hotel pickup within three kilometres of the station at 7:30. A Saturday-only version adds a buffet lunch with all-you-can-eat Hokkaido melon. And the whole route can be upgraded to private.

The driver acts as guide, and the itinerary can shift with weather and traffic. Note that the operator asks for a WhatsApp number at booking for pickup coordination.

Leo made our Hokkaido flower tour absolutely unforgettable. He knew exactly when to visit each spot to avoid the crowds and get the best light for photos, and his passion for the region really shone through. He even took the time to help everyone snap great pictures at the Blue Pond and gave us interesting local stories along the way. Professional, energetic, and genuinely caring—highly recommend Leo as your guide!

The driver Mr.Yu arrived the hotel for pick-up on time, gave us enough time at each stop for sight seeing and taking pictures. He made good recommdation of the food to purchase. He provided seamless service and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Although we didn't know each other, the whole group chatted with each other during the trip and had a great time.

February for deep snow and the Snow Festival, or late June to mid-July for Furano's lavender. Note that Sapporo's cumulative snowfall of 4.7–5 m is often misread — actual ground depth peaks around 80–100 cm in February. Full month-by-month detail in our best time to visit Sapporo guide.
The 2027 festival runs 4–11 February across Odori, Susukino and Tsudome, and entry to all three sites is free. Hotels sell out 6–9 months ahead and rates run 2–3× normal — our Snow Festival guide covers whether that premium is worth paying.
The subway covers most of the city at ¥210–380 a ride, and the weekend Donichika pass is just ¥520 — far better value than the ¥830 weekday version. The airport train is ¥1,230 (33–37 min). See getting around Sapporo.
Yes — it's 30 minutes and ¥800 by JR, making it the easiest day trip in Hokkaido. The canal, glassworks and sushi street fill a comfortable day. Timing tips and the Snow Light Path dates are in our Otaru day trip guide.
Miso ramen (invented here around 1954), jingisukan lamb BBQ, soup curry, and Nijo Market seafood. Bowls run ¥900–1,500. Where locals actually eat — and which famous spots to skip — is in our Sapporo food guide.
Niseko has the deepest snow (~15 m a season) but the highest prices — a 2026-27 peak day pass is ¥13,500. Rusutsu, Kiroro and Sapporo Teine (¥8,400 online) offer similar powder for less. Honest comparison in our Niseko and Hokkaido ski guide.
Three days works well: one for the city, one for Otaru, and one for a day trip or ski day. Our Sapporo 3-day itinerary has winter and summer variants with realistic timings.
