Full description
This private day covers three places on Sapporo's southern edge that are all worth seeing and all awkward to combine without a car. Lake Shikotsu is the furthest out, about an hour from the city, a deep caldera lake known for exceptionally clear water and ringed by wooded volcanic slopes. It is the quiet part of the day and the part most people remember. From the lake the route works back towards the city and Takino Snow Park, where the winter version of a large hillside park turns into sledding, snow play and open white slopes, a good stop for families and an easy one for anyone who just wants to be out in the snow without hiking through it. The last of the three is Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill, the pasture on the edge of Sapporo where sheep graze in front of a view straight back across the city, and where the statue of Dr. Clark stands with his arm out over the plain. It is the classic Sapporo photograph and it makes more sense at the end of a day than at the start, once you have seen what lies beyond the city. Throughout, you have door-to-door comfort with a dedicated driver-guide and a plan that stays flexible, so the order and the timings can shift to suit the weather, the light or simply how your group is feeling.
