Kimono and Matcha Experience
Full description
Hokkaido is the part of Japan with the shallowest traditional roots — it was settled in earnest only from the 1870s, on a grid, with foreign agricultural advice — which is exactly why a properly done kimono and tea session in Sapporo is worth seeking out rather than assuming you should wait for Kyoto.
You start by choosing a kimono from a curated collection and being dressed with professional care. That process takes longer than people expect and is worth paying attention to: the layers, the padding, the way the obi is tied and how the whole garment is built to be worn rather than draped. It changes how you stand.
Dressed, you have time in the main space, which is arranged as a museum-like display of traditional crafts from across Japan. Photographing yourself here rather than on a street is the trade this experience makes — the setting is controlled and considered, and you can take your time.
The second half moves to a private tea room with tatami. Matcha is prepared in front of you, so you watch the sequence properly — the warming of the bowl, the measured powder, the whisking — and drink it with traditional tea sweets. Watching it done well at close range is a very different thing from being served in a crowded hall.
One condition to plan around: the kimono cannot be worn outside the venue. This is an in-house experience, not a rental for walking the city, and anyone hoping to photograph themselves around Sapporo should book a street rental instead.
Groups cap at four and instruction is in English. Ten minutes on foot from Nishi 28-chome Station.
