Full description
Kumiko is joinery reduced to its purest form. Thin strips of wood are cut, notched and fitted together into geometric lattices with no nails, no screws and — traditionally — no glue: the pieces hold because the angles are cut precisely enough that they lock. It has been used in Japanese doors, screens and transoms for over a thousand years, and a single panel can contain hundreds of individually shaped pieces.
You will not build a transom in ninety minutes, but you will build a coaster, and the kit is prepared so that a complete beginner produces something genuinely good. You assemble the pieces step by step, glue them, and finish the surface with sandpaper — the whole sequence rather than a token final step, which is what makes it satisfying.
The patterns have names and meanings, and the guide takes you through the history and the geometry: which arrangements represent hemp leaves, which represent tortoiseshell, and why the same handful of angles generates so many designs.
The setting adds a lot. This is a cultural space and craft showroom in Kita-Maruyama, and finished kumiko work — the real thing, at real scale — is on display, which puts your coaster in perspective in the best way. Japanese tea and a light sweet are served during the session, and there is a curated shop of traditional crafts to browse afterwards.
