Full description
Hokkaido's summer has a short, spectacular window, and this two-day tour is built to catch it. You leave Sapporo behind for the interior of the island, where the farmland around Furano and Biei turns into bands of colour that draw visitors from all over Japan. The centrepiece is Farm Tomita, whose lavender terraces run in purple stripes down the hillside and scent the air for the whole time you are there. Timing matters with lavender, so after the middle of August the tour turns instead to Shikisai-no-oka, where the flower stripes keep their colour later in the season and the effect is just as striking. Biei's Blue Pond is the other landmark of the trip, a still, cobalt-coloured body of water with dead trees standing in it, a place that looks unreal in photographs and only slightly less so in person. The two days finish at Ningle Terrace, a scattering of small wooden craft cabins connected by woodland paths and lit by lanterns after dark, which is the quiet, atmospheric end the trip deserves. Spreading this across two days rather than compressing it into one makes the difference between rushing between viewpoints and actually being somewhere. The distances in central Hokkaido are long, the light is best early and late, and an overnight lets you use both ends of the day instead of spending them on the road.
