Full description
If you only have one morning in Sapporo, the Golden Route is the walk that sums the city up, and this two-hour guided version covers it properly. You start at the Sapporo TV Tower at the head of Odori, where you have a good half hour to take in the views along the park and let your guide explain the layout of the city spread out beneath you. Sapporo was planned rather than grown, and seeing that grid from above before you walk it makes everything that follows easier to read. From the tower the route runs west on foot to the Sapporo Clock Tower, the modest wooden building that has become the city's emblem, where your guide sets out its history and why a structure this plain matters so much to the people who live here. The walk finishes at the Former Hokkaido Government Office, the red brick building set back behind its own grounds, whose architecture tells you a great deal about the ambitions of the era in which Hokkaido was developed. Throughout, the value is in the commentary: these are three landmarks you could find yourself in twenty minutes with a map, but knowing what they meant and how they fit together turns a checklist into a coherent story about how this city came to exist. The whole route is flat, central and easily walkable, and finishing before midday leaves the rest of your day free for the markets, the food or a trip out of town.

I was so happy to take this tour to get oriented to Sapporo and it's history. Tom was a great guide and answered all sorts of my questions. I would highly recommended this tour to those who want to learn about Sapporo. It's a good first day activity
Great overview of Sapporo city from elevation at TV Tower. Historic information. Tour guide Iku responded to our questions. Recommend for first day of stay in Sapporo.
Tom was an excellent tour guide. Super friendly, knowledgeable about the area and shared lots of interesting information about the sights we visited around Sapporo. I highly recommend the walking tour. Thank you, Tom, for sharing the morning with us around beautiful Sapporo.
The tour is a great way to start one’s Sapporo trip. Our tour guide Tom is very kind, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We enjoyed and learned a lot too. We were 4 in the group and also travelled with senior citizens. It was like a private tour. Thank you so much. :)
Tom was my guide, and the tour was really nice to discover the main attractions of Sapporo. He was super knowledgeable, very chill, fun and friendly. His English skills are impeccable. I was lucky to be the only participant today so it almost felt like visiting the city with a friend. I truly enjoyed the pace, the sights and all the anecdotes that Tom shared.
Even on a rainy day, Iku made the tour engaging and informative. As someone who’s visited Sapporo several times, I learned new information and insights about the city’s history and layout. The pacing was spot on, and she also shared her recommendations for restaurants and a great sento that was much needed for a cold day. A perfect way to start our trip — I wish Iku offered more tours!
If you like to learn the history of Sapporo, highly recommend this walking tour. Even though it was only 2 hours and was raining hard, I still enjoyed it a lot. Our guide, Iku showed us interesting places and told us interesting stories which I wouldn’t know seeing it by myself. Overall I had a great time.
At under 2 hours, the tour was just the right amount of time to cover the key sites of downtown Sapporo. Iku was very informative and made the tour fun despite the rain. Iku also gave us a lot of tips and recommendations on what to see in Sapporo!
Tom's knowledge and good English skills. helped make this an excellent tour. Only two on the tour, so was relaxed and personal. TV Tower tour to top was unexpected.
The tour was great! I was the only participant today and Tom told me a lot about Sapporo's history. I had a wonderful morning and can highly recommend the tour to everyone.
