Full description
Southern Hokkaido in spring and summer looks like nowhere else in Japan, and this ten-hour small-group tour is built specifically for those seasons. The route links three of the region's best-known places in a single day, with no more than nine participants along for the ride, which keeps the vehicle comfortable and the stops flexible. Around Lake Toya the appeal is the farms: open, rolling pasture running down towards a broad caldera lake, with the kind of long green views that make people compare this part of Japan to Europe. The tour makes time for the beautiful farm country here rather than treating the lake as a single photo stop. Niseko, better known internationally for its winter, is a different place entirely once the snow has gone, and the parks there give you the mountain scenery without any of the ski-season crowding. Noboribetsu completes the trio, the hot-spring town whose volcanic landscape is the most dramatic thing in the region. Travelling in a small group makes a real difference on a day of this length: boarding is quick, the group moves together easily, and there is far less of the waiting that eats into a large coach tour. Being seasonal, the day is put together to show spring and summer Hokkaido at its best, which is a version of the island that most international visitors, who come for the powder, never get to see at all.
