Full description
This two-and-a-half-hour guided walk pairs the story of how Sapporo came to be with the flavours that made Hokkaido famous. You begin at the Sapporo Clock Tower, the wooden building that has outlasted everything around it and still keeps time in the middle of a modern city, where your guide sets out the early history of the settlement. A short walk brings you to the Sapporo TV Tower at the eastern end of Odori, where you have time to take in the views along the park and hear how the grid of the modern city was laid out beneath you. From there the route moves into the Sosei East Area, the quarter where Sapporo's earliest beginnings are still legible in the street pattern and the older buildings, and your guide unpacks what was here before the city grew around it. The walk finishes at Nijo Market, the covered row of fishmongers and small eateries that has fed the city for generations. Here you sit down to a fresh and generous lunch drawn from Hokkaido's waters, with your guide on hand to explain what is in season, what is local and what is worth going back for on your own. It is an easy, flat and entirely walkable route through the centre of the city, and it works equally well as a first orientation on your opening morning or as a way of filling in the background once you have already had a look around.
