Full description

Hokkaido gets an enormous amount of snow, and snowshoes are the traditional answer to the question of how you move through it. On this six-hour guided outing you learn to do exactly that, starting from Makomanai on Sapporo's southern edge and driving half an hour into Shikotsu-Toya National Park. After a safety briefing your guide fits you out and teaches you the technique, which takes very little time to pick up and immediately opens up terrain that would be impossible to cross on foot. The hike itself runs for around four and a half hours through the winter forest, and the appeal of it is the quiet: away from the road there is essentially no sound, the trees carry a load of snow, and animal tracks are often the only sign anyone or anything has passed. Lunch is taken out on the trail, which is part of the pleasure of a winter day like this. Your guide sets the pace and reads the conditions, and no previous snowshoeing experience is needed, only a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to be outdoors in the cold. The day ends the way a Japanese winter day should, with a visit to one of the many onsen in the area, so you come off the snow and straight into hot water. Transport by van from Sapporo and back is part of the trip, so all you need to do is dress for the weather and turn up.

Amazing! Had a great time learning to snowshoe and going for a walk through the forest, which was beautiful. The guide was also great, he was helpful and knowledgeable, and also good to talk to. The onsen was also a great location. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested πŸ‘

The day finishes with a visit to one of the local onsen, and tattoo policies vary between Japanese bathhouses, with some refusing entry to visibly tattooed guests. Mention it to the operator at booking so they can confirm the policy at the facility they use before your trip.
Dress properly for Hokkaido winter: warm base layers, an insulated waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a hat and waterproof boots, since you will be on deep snow for hours. Bring a small towel for the onsen, sunglasses for the glare off the snow, and something to drink. Meet at Makomanai on Sapporo's southern edge, with details confirmed by the operator on booking.

February for deep snow and the Snow Festival, or late June to mid-July for Furano's lavender. Note that Sapporo's cumulative snowfall of 4.7–5 m is often misread β€” actual ground depth peaks around 80–100 cm in February. Full month-by-month detail in our best time to visit Sapporo guide.
The 2027 festival runs 4–11 February across Odori, Susukino and Tsudome, and entry to all three sites is free. Hotels sell out 6–9 months ahead and rates run 2–3Γ— normal β€” our Snow Festival guide covers whether that premium is worth paying.
The subway covers most of the city at Β₯210–380 a ride, and the weekend Donichika pass is just Β₯520 β€” far better value than the Β₯830 weekday version. The airport train is Β₯1,230 (33–37 min). See getting around Sapporo.
Yes β€” it's 30 minutes and Β₯800 by JR, making it the easiest day trip in Hokkaido. The canal, glassworks and sushi street fill a comfortable day. Timing tips and the Snow Light Path dates are in our Otaru day trip guide.
Miso ramen (invented here around 1954), jingisukan lamb BBQ, soup curry, and Nijo Market seafood. Bowls run Β₯900–1,500. Where locals actually eat β€” and which famous spots to skip β€” is in our Sapporo food guide.
Niseko has the deepest snow (~15 m a season) but the highest prices β€” a 2026-27 peak day pass is Β₯13,500. Rusutsu, Kiroro and Sapporo Teine (Β₯8,400 online) offer similar powder for less. Honest comparison in our Niseko and Hokkaido ski guide.
