Full description
Otaru is the obvious day trip from Sapporo and also the one most often done badly, squeezed into a two-hour group stop that gets you a photograph of the canal and very little else. This private tour takes the opposite approach: ten full hours, a vehicle for your group alone, and an English-speaking guide-driver who both explains the town and does the driving. Having the language handled matters more here than people expect. Otaru's interest lies in details, in why a small port on the Sea of Japan ended up with grand stone banks and a canal lined with warehouses, and none of that is legible from signage alone. A guide who speaks English can tell you the story as you walk it. Just as important is the flexibility. The route is yours and it can change on the day, so if the weather closes in you can rearrange around it, and if somewhere turns out to be the highlight you can simply stay. Ten hours is generous enough to include the parts of the area that group tours never reach, and to build in a proper meal rather than a rushed one. With your own vehicle you are never waiting for transport, your coats and bags stay in the car, and the distances between the town and the surrounding viewpoints stop mattering. For families, small groups and anyone who dislikes being herded, it is a far better way to see the place.
