Full description
Noboribetsu and Lake Toya are the two great volcanic destinations of southern Hokkaido, and a private day is the only way to give both of them the time they deserve. This tour hands your group its own vehicle and an English-speaking guide-driver for ten hours, with nobody else along and no schedule but your own. Noboribetsu is Japan's best known hot-spring resort, and the reason for that sits above the town in Hell Valley, a raw volcanic basin where steam pours out of cracked ground and the rock is stained yellow with sulphur. Boardwalks take you into the middle of it, and having a guide means you understand what you are looking at rather than simply photographing it. Lake Toya is the counterpoint, a wide caldera lake with a calm surface and volcanic peaks standing around it, a place to slow down after the intensity of the valley. Because everything is flexible, the balance between the two is yours to set, and the route can be reshaped during the day if the weather changes or one place holds your attention. Practically, a private vehicle makes an enormous difference on this itinerary: the two destinations are far apart, the public transport between them is slow, and a group coach would give you barely an hour at each. Here you have door-to-door travel from your accommodation, somewhere warm to sit between stops, and a guide who can answer questions rather than deliver a script.
