Hokkaido's west coast does three unrelated things extremely well and this day strings them together.
Fruit first, at a tourist orchard in Yoichi. Picking is all-you-can-eat and what is ripe depends entirely on when you come — cherries in July, plums and pears through late summer, apples into autumn. The option worth knowing about is Shine Muscat, the seedless green grape that has become Japan's prestige fruit and sells for absurd money in Tokyo department stores; the Hokkaido harvest window is short, and picking them off the vine yourself is a very different proposition from buying one in a presentation box.
The Nikka Yoichi distillery follows, and it is the origin story of Japanese whisky. Masataka Taketsuru studied distilling in Scotland in the 1920s, came back with a Scottish wife, and chose Yoichi because the cold, damp, peaty coast reminded him of Speyside. The stills here are still coal-fired, which almost nowhere in the world does any more. Ninety minutes covers the tour and lunch at the on-site restaurant, paid separately.
Then the coast. Shimamui is one of Japan's hundred finest seascapes — you come through a tunnel and the view opens onto cliffs above water that is genuinely, improbably blue. Cape Kamui at the tip of the Shakotan Peninsula closes the day with a narrow ridge walk out above the sea.
Departure is 08:50 from Exit 31 of Odori Station in Sapporo. Guides work in English, Chinese and Japanese. Meals are your own, and the orchard admission is included only on the packages that say so.
