Full description
This is a 1.5-hour experience in Tokyo. It is run by Localized Walking, Bike & Food Tours, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.
The price covers Japanese calligraphy workshop, instructor, Use of traditional brushes, Use of modern fude pen and Personal calligraphy artwork to take home. It does not cover Transportation to and from the workshop, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Localized Walking, Bike & Food Tours sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Localized Walking, Bike & Food Tours before treating your booking as final. I had a wonderful time attending the calligraphy workshop with Yoshi. The entire experience was both engaging and deeply enjoyable, with Yoshi proving to be a patient, skilled, and welcoming teacher who guides you through every brushstroke with great care. The space was fully accessible for a manual wheelchair, making the session comfortable, smooth, and easy to navigate from start to finish. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in learning the art of calligraphy. It is a fantastic hands-on experience, whether you are a complete beginner or looking to refine your technique.
Mei was an amazing instructor. I learned a lot about shodo and its significance in Japanese culture. I think I will continue to practice it back home as well.
It was a really fun experience. Our instructor Mei explained us a lot about the history of calligraphy. She was super patient and passionate about the topic. She told us a lot of useful tips to write and at the end you can take home your artwork. Highly recommended!
Kiyo is very lovely. We had wonderful conversations and she guided me throughout the process. She corrected, praised, and encouraged throughout the whole session. She gave plenty of time for me to practice writing. This is a worthwhile experience. Kiyo, your patience and encouragement was very much appreciated.
It was amazing experience with Mie-san as a sensei. Overview of calligraphy techniques and styles was specifically useful. We also enjoyed a piece of art created during this workshop. I strongly recommend to come and enjoy this experience. Thank you!
The most fun and interesting experience! Highly recommended!!
We had an amazing time at the Calligraphy workshop! Mieko was an excellent teacher- we learnt about the history and significance of calligraphy before getting to practice it ourselves. We’re really happy with the end product and will treasure the souvenir forever!
We booked as a group of 5 and none of us had previous experience. The workshop was amazing and Mei was truly expiring an encouraging. Anybody stopping in Tokyo should set aside some time to try this!
Kiyo was an amazing host. She first taught me about calligraphy and the history of it, to get more insights in why it is practiced in Japan. We then went over the basic strokes (horizontal, vertical etc.), and she let me try to recreate them. After some practice I had to choose which Kanji I wanted to write, and on what item. After practicing the Kanji, with immaculate supervision from Kiyo, I felt confident enough to write the final product. I’m super happy with how i turned out. And Kiyo is amazing at speaking English, so that made it all the more easier for me to have so much fun!
The activity was amazing. I’ve learned a lot from Mei (instructor) and she was very nice and an excellent teacher.
The amazing Kito was our instructor. She is really knowledgeable in her craft and the history of Japanese culture. She made the class so easy. This was great value for money. Come here for amazing calligraphy lessons and take your art home too!
Mai was extremely helpful and she made it easy to follow even though we (me and my mum) both never tried Calligraphy before. I think it's a great activity for any trip to Japan and I really recognise it😁
