Full description
This is a 195-minute experience in Tokyo. It is run by National Theatre, Japan, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.
The price covers Theatre tickets, English Audio Guide and Free English explanation sheet. It does not cover Transportation to the theater, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
National Theatre, Japan sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

The Sumo experience was absolutely outstanding and exceeded all of our expectations. Everything was perfectly organized, and it was fascinating to learn about the traditions and culture of sumo. The atmosphere was amazing, and the staff made us feel very welcome throughout the experience. The food was also excellent and added even more to this unforgettable experience. We truly enjoyed every moment and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Japan. Thank you for such a wonderful and memorable time!
A terrific experience. it was the perfect length and the opening commentary was very helpful.
A great introduction to Kabuki theatre. The audio guide was very informative. Even though it wasn’t in the famous Kabuki theatre it was well worth seeing.
(Bunraku) The puppets are very complex and detailed and the acting very precise. There’s a single man singing the narration and all the parts, this is an impressive art in itself. The audio guide explained the story as it went along, with some background - the voice was a posh older lady which I found quite soothing and easy to listen to.
Amazing experience! Glad we got an audio guide, so we could follow the story. Wonderful Bunraku experience. The title mentions Kabuki for some reason, although no kabuki was performed. Still, happy with this experience.
Everything was just great. It was a mesmerizing performance by some of the finest actors.
Cannot be described! It has to be experienced! WOW, what a fantastic theatre program!
Authentic experience of Kabuki play @ National theatre.
The performance and the english helping text was wonderful. The acting is incredible. The stagedesign is far from acseptible.
Amazing experience! Audio guide for non Japanese speakers is essential.
I truly enjoyed the play and recommend kabuki to anyone interested in theatre or just who wants to experience Japanese culture from a different perspective. The play was great, the recordings with English translations concise and very informative. I learned a lot about kabuki's history and had a wonderful time!! :)
Incredible experience I cannot say more. I haven't seen anything similar in my life and I was so impressed. I'm already trying to find the next one but unfortunately they are quite limited. if you really want to see a traditional Japanese puppet theatre please go for it, it's really worth it!
