Full description

Kamakura was the seat of government for a century and a half from 1185, which is why a town of 170,000 people on a beach has the density of major temples it does. It is an hour from Tokyo and the standard way to see it — trains, transfers, working out which line goes where — eats a good part of the day. This coach tour removes that and adds the one piece of transport you actually want to be on.

The Great Buddha comes first. Thirteen metres of bronze cast in 1252, sitting in the open because the hall built around it was destroyed by a tsunami in 1498 and never replaced, which is why it now looks the way everyone pictures it. Admission to walk inside the statue is a small separate charge at the gate if you want it.

The Enoden ride is included and is the reason to do this rather than a generic day trip. It is a single-track line from 1902 that runs between people's houses — close enough to touch the walls in places — then breaks out onto the coast road with the sea on one side. The stop at Kamakura Koko-Mae is the level crossing that appears in the Slam Dunk opening, which is why a queue of people is always photographing an ordinary railway crossing with the ocean behind it.

Enoshima closes the day: a small island connected by a bridge, with shrines climbing its slope and views back to Fuji when the air is clear.

Departures are 8:00 from Tokyo Station or 8:30 from Shinjuku, and the day runs about ten hours. Meals are not included, which is right — Kamakura's shirasu-don, the local whitebait rice bowl, is worth choosing yourself.

Alex was a very good and kind guide. the tour is really nice. maybe the timing in Enoshima was unfortunately little bit short, but the team did not did not made it any shorter even tough we had traffic jam on the way back. There is also a possibility to stay more and come back by yourself if you want to enjoy longer time in there. Good experience and thanks to Alex for the tour !

A great day out and a fantastic experience, I especially loved the Big Buddha, which was the most amazing / impressive thing I saw throughout the entirety of my trip to Japan I think. Nice having a smaller group where it was easier to chat to people too, and made for a comfortable coach ride as a result. Great value for money and a very worthwhile day out, to experience more of Japan and more of the traditional culture and history.

This tour to Kamakura and Enoshima was absolutely fantastic! Seeing the iconic Great Buddha up close was a breathtaking and unforgettable experience. The scenic vintage train ride along the coast was so cool and offered some of the most beautiful seaside views of the trip.The entire itinerary was perfectly paced, and it was the perfect break from the bustling city center of Tokyo. Getting to explore the historic temples and the beautiful island of Enoshima made for an amazing day out. The transportation was smooth, and everything ran right on time. Highly recommend booking this trip!
