Full description
This is a 1-hour experience in Tokyo. It is run by Shishido Inc., an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.
The price covers Lesson fee. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Shishido Inc. sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Shishido Inc. before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Kouzan is very talented and passionate about music & the Shamisen. Our lesson was great, he taught me to play a simple song but it was very satisfying to be able to play it by the end of the lesson. It was very reasonably priced and as a musician I left feeling very fulfilled! This was the best thing I did in Japan by far and I’d recommend it to anyone who has an interest in music / plays an instrument or just wants an authentic look into traditional Japanese instruments.
A fantastic and unexpected highlight of my trip! In just one hour, Kouzan taught me how to play “Sakura” on the shamisen as a complete beginner. He was incredibly patient, friendly, and encouraging throughout the lesson. The residential neighborhood setting also made the experience feel very authentic and personal. Highly recommended!
Absolutely blown away by this experience!! A wonderful balance of historic study and play. It was my last day in my Japan when I had my lesson but I would call it the highlight of the whole trip!
We had an excellent class, it flew by so quickly! Kouzan Oyama is both an excellent performer and teacher. He has written his own books that will be used during the class which are very helpful for a first time learner to play a song or two before the end of the hour. He is very patient and was able to really help us become familiar with the instrument quickly, and was also able to give the history of the shamisen as well as answer a myriad of questions I had in English! In teaching us all of the various techniques involved in shamisen performance, he would also perform all the music himself t
It was a great learning experience, Oyama San was a great and patient teacher and I was able to learn the Sakura song in one session !
