Full description

This is a 2.5-hour experience in Tokyo. It is run by Manga Do, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.

The price covers manga artist instructor, Interpreter and Manga drawing materials. It does not cover Food and drinks and Pickup, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Manga Do sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Manga Do before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Includes

  • Professional manga artist instructor

This one of the best things we have done. Both me and my son loved every second and have a wonderful piece of art as a reminder. The artists were so nice and wanted us to create an amazing piece. We have learned lots of skills. You don’t need any art skill really to do this.

We had a great mother / daughter experience with the artist and the interpret. The workshop is available for any level of drawing as the artist helps with the sketch. She also adapts to the character you want to draw, and the final drawing turned into a beautiful souvenir.

My son and I loved the activity. He likes to draw Manga characters on his computer so this was really an amazing experience for him. The artist teaching and the assistant translating were so nice and helpful. I would recommend to anyone who enjoy art even if you are not used to draw.

Amazing authentic experience with a professional artist who patiently guided our 3 tween/teenage kids through manga. They created really awesome drawings and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Manga Drawing Workshop was one of our highlights in Tokyo. It was amazing how all our attempts to somehow draw a manga (never done before!) totally worked out fine - all 3 kids + 2 grown ups now have a beautifully self-crafted manga as a souvenir, thanks so much!! Recommendation!!

Our two girls participated in the activity and we are reviewing based on their experience which was fantastic. They were guided along in a fun way and had a blast. This is a must do for kids who are into anime and manga. My girls even ended up going to stationary in Shinjuku to buy a lot of art supplies !!

since our group was 5... they split us with 2 different teachers and interpreters ...I'm not an artist only one in our family can really draw.. but the experience was so much fun and the results afterwards ere great.... it's a must do.

It was our group of three only so it felt like a private lesson. The artist sketched out our designs and we were able to personalize and add details to them. We were able to learn more about creating and publishing manga. We left with real art we created and had fun doing it.

We did the manga drawing experience workshop on Monday 29/6. It lasted for around 2hrs. You picked what you wanted to draw before hand. You could choose a character, your pet, family member etc. The artist would make an outline of your chosen design and you would adjust and go over and shade it in from there on. Help was always there when needed. Both me and my son really enjoyed the experience and took home a personal piece of artwork. Would 100% recommend if your a big manga fan and even not like me who also had just as much fun.

My daughter and I had so much fun! She has some drawing experience and I came in as a complete beginner and we both left with a great piece of work that we loved. A great souvenir from our vacation in Tokyo! Timing was a bit tight to learn all of the techniques, but we were happy with our finished products. Many thanks to the artist and translator!

I booked this for my husbands birthday present and we had the most amazing time. Fuyu Sensei and Machi were so lovely and helpful. We had the best afternoon, Fuyu Sensei is so talented and helped us soo much with our drawings - we now have the most incredible pieces of art to remember our time in Tokyo. Machi was so lovely to chat to and gave us great recommendations for Shibuya (Machi - we avoided the crossing!😂) and Okinawa. Brilliant afternoon and really good value for money - thank you both so much!!

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or late October to early December for autumn colour and the clearest skies. Contrary to most advice, October is Tokyo's wettest month (234.8 mm), not the June rainy season. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Tokyo guide.
Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card and budget ¥1,000–¥1,400 a day. Do not buy a JR Pass for a Tokyo-only trip — it costs ¥50,000 and excludes Tokyo Metro and Toei entirely. Note JR East raised Tokyo fares on 14 March 2026, so Metro is now cheaper than JR on several routes. See getting around Tokyo.
Shibuya Sky releases tickets only 14 days ahead at 00:00 JST — it cannot be booked months in advance. teamLab Borderless tickets drop at 12:00 JST on the 1st of each month. Our 3-day Tokyo itinerary lists every booking deadline.
Yes — a Japanese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. 1968 Vienna Convention permits are not valid in Japan. Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan need an official JAF translation instead. Arrange it before you fly; see the Tokyo go-kart guide.
Yes — the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko takes about 1h 45m for ¥2,200. But manage expectations: Fuji is visible on 84% of December mornings and only 23% of July mornings, and cloud builds through the day, so go early. Details in our Mount Fuji day trip guide.
Edomae sushi (the Tokyo Bay style, where curing began as a workaround for having no refrigeration), monjayaki — a runny griddle dish unique to Tokyo with 80+ specialists on Tsukishima's Monja Street — and soba. Also worth knowing: Tsukiji Outer Market never closed; only the wholesale auction moved to Toyosu. See the Tokyo food guide.
The crossing itself takes about ninety seconds. What makes it worth an evening is one street back — Nonbei Yokocho, a lantern-lit alley of tiny bars a minute away that almost nobody who photographs the scramble walks into. Note street drinking is banned in the area 18:00–05:00 year-round, though the ordinance carries no fine. See the Shibuya Crossing guide.
Yes, some. Japan's cashless ratio reached 58% in 2025, so over 40% of payments are still cash — and card refusal is most likely at small independent izakaya, ramen ticket machines and market stalls. Tipping is not expected anywhere.
