Full description

Almost every Mount Fuji day trip from Tokyo is a private car with a driver, and the price reflects it. This is the other kind: a shared coach, a fixed route around the north side of the mountain, and a price that makes Fuji a sensible day out rather than a budget decision.

The route strings together the four views that actually work. Lake Yamanaka is first and is the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes; in the early morning the water goes flat enough to hold a complete reflection of the mountain. Oshino Hakkai follows — eight spring-fed ponds in an old thatched village, filled by Fuji snowmelt that has spent decades filtering down through volcanic rock, and clear enough that the bottom is sharp at several metres. Oishi Park sits on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi with the mountain directly across the water and seasonal flowerbeds in the foreground, which is why it appears in so many photographs. Lake Kawaguchi itself closes the loop.

Every attraction on the route is free to enter, so the ticket price covers the coach and the guide and there is nothing further to pay at the gate. Guides work in English and wear a green vest and carry a numbered red flag at the meeting point, which makes finding the group straightforward at a busy station.

One honest caution, and the operator states it plainly: Fuji makes its own weather and the mountain is frequently invisible. Winter mornings are the most reliable; summer afternoons are the least. Nobody can guarantee the view, and you should book knowing that.

Departures run from Tokyo Station's north exit at 7:30 or Shinjuku's west exit at 8:00, and a private version of the same route exists if you would rather not share.
