Full description
This is a 3-hour experience from Tokyo, built around Tennōji Temple, Yanaka Cemetery and Yoshidaya Liquor Shop. It is run by Localized Walking, Bike & Food Tours, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.
The price covers Tour guide. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Nippori Station. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Localized Walking, Bike & Food Tours before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

this was the absolute BEST tour I have EVER done! Kiyo was an outstanding guide and felt like a sister by the end. I wish I could re-live this tour again. she was super knowledgeable, an absolute sunshine of a person, answered all questions and was just a joy! Do not hesitate to book this tour with her. I would give it 6...10 stars if possible!!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Truly one of the BEST city walking tours I’ve ever done. Our guide Akajaki (I hope I spell the name right) is exceptionally friendly and knows these old quarters of Tokyo inside out. She showed us hidden spots we’d never have found on our own. Jokingly, she said ‘I better not do this tour again or too many will know about these hidden places!’. Along the way there was no shortage of restful stops (luckily, since it was at least 32 degrees!), including a gorgeous bakery to fuel up with patisseries and delicious home-made lemonade.
My guide, Wakana, is very nice and professional. Perfect communication (almost-native English), well-prepared guidance (natural route from Nippori to Yanaka, Nezu, Yanaka Ginza), knowledgeable introduction (history, society, geographic etc), personalized recommendation in Yanaka Ginza. I highly recommend this tour!
We had an amazing experience on the Old Yanaka Walking Tour! Our guide, Rei, was absolutely wonderful. She was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so much interesting history and insight about the area and Tokyo that we would never have learned on our own. One of the highlights was getting to see so many unique and lesser-known places that we likely would have completely missed without her. Rei also gave us plenty of time at each stop to explore on our own, take photos, and even get our temple and shrine books stamped, which was such a special part of the experience. Rei was friendly, engaging
Yaya was a very nice and kind guide! Thanks for the time and informations.
Great tour that let us explore a beautiful neighborhood in Tokyo which we would otherwise have missed. Wakana, our guide, was amazing in guiding us through both the history and the current way of life in Yanaka. She also gave precious tips about food and other activities.
Yoshie our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic!! knowing so little about Japan, she gave us a fantastic introduction!! Many thanks for this!!
Mei was a truly wonderful guide. She was very kind and open, she had a great knowledge and a great sense of humour! We enjoyed every minute of it!
Rei was an absolutely amazing guide! Even though it was raining, her warm and friendly energy kept everyone engaged, making the entire tour so lively and fun. All the places we visited felt completely separated from the hustle and bustle of modern Tokyo, offering a peaceful, nostalgic atmosphere. Walking through quiet residential neighborhoods to discover hidden local shrines and community spots was exactly what I was looking for—it really let us feel the authentic, daily life of the city. On top of that, Rei’s detailed explanations at each stop were fantastic and gave us a much deeper underst
Yanaka is beautiful and the tour was perfect to see all the streets and impeccable shrines. Ayaka was an amazing tour guide, calm and patient. Was very insightful and answered all our questions.
Aya was a lovely guide who showed us all the lovely sights in Yanaka . She was considerate and answered all our questions with good humour! A great experience - could mot have done it on our own 😄
Had such a nice time doing the walking tour. Rai was an awesome guide!
