Full description

This is a 3-hour experience from Tokyo, built around Black cab, Toyosu Fish Market and Bus/coach. It is run by MACHI TOUR JAPAN, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Tokyo's wholesale fish market moved from Tsukiji to Toyosu in 2018, but the Tsukiji Outer Market, the lanes of shops and stalls around the old site, stayed and is where the food walks go: tamagoyaki on a stick, tuna cuts, uni, grilled scallops and knife shops, busiest from about 8:00 to 11:00 and closed on Sundays and some Wednesdays. The tuna auction itself is at Toyosu, watched from a viewing deck before 6:30 with an advance lottery. Sushi classes teach shari, the vinegared rice, and the hand pressure of nigiri; most run two to three hours and you eat what you make.

The price covers private guide, Walking tour, Taxi from your hotel to the market and Bus from Toyosu to Tsukiji. It does not cover Breakfast and Drinks, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

MACHI TOUR JAPAN sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with MACHI TOUR JAPAN before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

We (myself, husband and 9 year old son) had an amazing morning with our guide Eriko. She showed us the main auction and secondary buying area. She helped us when we wanted to purchase goods at the stores close to the auction and after that the visit to Tsukiji market was fabulous as well. She took time to explain the ins and outs of the auction and market and made great recommendations for what to try! We had the most memorable experience it was delightful.

We had an excellent tour of the markets with Nobby. We won the lottery to be on the auction floor and he did a wonderful job of explaining what we would see and experience there. He taught us so much about the history of the city and took us to some great food stalls. This was our first event, only 9 hours after we landed and it was great!

Sachiyo is a wonderful tour guide. She was very patient, knowledgeable and brought us to have the best japanese breakfast we ever had. She shared a lot of knowledge in regards to japanese history and markets overall. With this tour you get to see a very real part of Tokyo, in contact with their market traditions, exotic products and food. Fully recommend to anyone visiting Japan.

The tuna auction tour was one of the best experiences of our trip. The whole thing was exceptionally well-organized, insightful, and fun from start to finish. Our guide was fantastic — friendly, warm, and clearly knowledgeable about the tuna auction world. She was incredibly informative and knowledgeable, explaining the history, operations, and cultural details in an engaging way. She clearly wanted to make sure we had the best experience possible and went out of her way to answer all our questions with enthusiasm. The standout moment was how seamlessly she walked us through the lottery ticket

We had an incredible experience on our tour of the Toyosu Fish Market. Our guide Sachiyo met us promptly at our hotel, and we cabbed it over to the market together. She was very friendly, knowledgeable, and organized. She even came prepared with a binder full of information, photos, and explanations. One of the highlights of our trip was the omakase restaurant she brought us to afterwards in Toyosu — it was phenomenal and honestly one of the best meals we had in Japan. We’re still thinking about that meal even after returning home. She also took us through a couple of local at both Toyosu and

This experience was probably one of the most memorable experiences for my husband and I during our 2-week trip in Japan. Sachiyo is an excellent guide. She’s very knowledgeable and adaptive to our desire to have best sushi and wagyu during the tour. We also appreciated knowing about the lottery to get to the lower deck for better viewing of the Tuna Auction. Highly recommended.

Our tour guide and the tour was excellent. YukaG was knowledgeable, personable, and friendly. She met us at our hotel and maximum our time at the fish markets. She took us to places that we wouldn’t have found on our own and made good recommendations along the way. The trip to the fish auction was a highlight of our trip. We were lucky to have won the market lottery which allowed us to be closer and see more of the fish, auction, and logistics of the market. YukaG helped us get to the right place seamlessly. Thank you thank you for such a memorable morning.

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or late October to early December for autumn colour and the clearest skies. Contrary to most advice, October is Tokyo's wettest month (234.8 mm), not the June rainy season. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Tokyo guide.
Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card and budget ¥1,000–¥1,400 a day. Do not buy a JR Pass for a Tokyo-only trip — it costs ¥50,000 and excludes Tokyo Metro and Toei entirely. Note JR East raised Tokyo fares on 14 March 2026, so Metro is now cheaper than JR on several routes. See getting around Tokyo.
Shibuya Sky releases tickets only 14 days ahead at 00:00 JST — it cannot be booked months in advance. teamLab Borderless tickets drop at 12:00 JST on the 1st of each month. Our 3-day Tokyo itinerary lists every booking deadline.
Yes — a Japanese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. 1968 Vienna Convention permits are not valid in Japan. Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan need an official JAF translation instead. Arrange it before you fly; see the Tokyo go-kart guide.
Yes — the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko takes about 1h 45m for ¥2,200. But manage expectations: Fuji is visible on 84% of December mornings and only 23% of July mornings, and cloud builds through the day, so go early. Details in our Mount Fuji day trip guide.
Edomae sushi (the Tokyo Bay style, where curing began as a workaround for having no refrigeration), monjayaki — a runny griddle dish unique to Tokyo with 80+ specialists on Tsukishima's Monja Street — and soba. Also worth knowing: Tsukiji Outer Market never closed; only the wholesale auction moved to Toyosu. See the Tokyo food guide.
The crossing itself takes about ninety seconds. What makes it worth an evening is one street back — Nonbei Yokocho, a lantern-lit alley of tiny bars a minute away that almost nobody who photographs the scramble walks into. Note street drinking is banned in the area 18:00–05:00 year-round, though the ordinance carries no fine. See the Shibuya Crossing guide.
Yes, some. Japan's cashless ratio reached 58% in 2025, so over 40% of payments are still cash — and card refusal is most likely at small independent izakaya, ramen ticket machines and market stalls. Tipping is not expected anywhere.
