Full description
Six hours is enough to understand how Tokyo is put together, if the route is built around contrast rather than a list of sights.
It opens in Asakusa at Senso-ji, standing since 645 and the oldest temple in the city, approached down Nakamise-dori's line of stalls. Then Yanaka, which is the piece most day tours skip: one of the few districts to survive both the 1923 earthquake and the wartime firebombing, so its wooden houses, temple walls and shopping street are genuinely old rather than rebuilt.
The Imperial Palace grounds occupy the site of Edo Castle, once the largest fortress in the world; the moats and stone walls are what remain, and they sit in the exact centre of the city. Meiji Shrine follows, inside a forest of roughly 100,000 trees donated from across Japan and planted by hand in the 1920s — designed to look like this a century later.
Harajuku closes the day, five minutes' walk and a hundred years from the shrine gate. That distance is the point the whole itinerary is making.

Detailed Itinerary
The day starts around 09:00 from your hotel or a station that suits you. Asakusa comes first because Senso-ji is calmer before the coaches arrive, and Nakamise-dori is walkable rather than shuffling.
Yanaka is a short hop north and is where the tour separates itself from a standard highlights run — narrow lanes, old timber buildings, and a shopping street where people still buy dinner from individual butchers and pickle shops. Lunch lands here or nearby.
The afternoon moves to the centre for the palace moat, then west for Meiji Shrine. The walk from the shrine's torii into Harajuku takes about five minutes and closes the day on the sharpest contrast in the city.
