A private guide, no fixed script: you say what you want out of Tokyo and the day is built around it, from Shibuya's crossing to the quiet shrine lanes.

Highlights

  • Route built around your interests, not a fixed itinerary
  • Stand at Shibuya Crossing, then see it from above
  • Meiji Shrine's donated forest, minutes from Harajuku
  • Senso-ji in Asakusa, the city's oldest temple since 645
  • Travel by train and on foot the way Tokyoites actually do

Full description

Most Tokyo tours march everyone past the same five landmarks in the same order. This one starts with a conversation instead. Your guide asks what you actually want — the neon and the crowds, or the back lanes where nobody is filming; a temple morning, or a full day of eating — and builds the route around that answer.

A typical day still touches what you came for. Shibuya Crossing is worth seeing from ground level and then again from above, and your guide knows which windows are free and which charge you for the view. Meiji Shrine sits inside a forest of roughly 100,000 trees, every one of them donated and planted by hand in the 1920s, and it is ten minutes on foot from Harajuku's teenage chaos — a contrast that says more about Tokyo than either place does alone. Across the river, Senso-ji has stood in Asakusa since 645, making it the oldest temple in the city.

What a local actually changes is the small stuff: which train car puts you at the right exit, which side of Nakamise-dori to walk so you are not fighting the crowd, which of the identical-looking ramen counters is the one worth queueing for. You move by train and on foot the way residents do, not in a coach.

Because the group is only your party, the pace bends. Slow down for a long lunch, skip a stop entirely, sit down when you have had enough — none of it needs a committee.

Detailed Itinerary

The day opens at Hachiko around 09:00, though the start time moves if you would rather beat the crowds or sleep in. The first half hour is genuinely planning: your guide sketches two or three possible routes and you pick. Shibuya comes first because the crossing is calmer before eleven and the elevated viewpoints have no queue yet. From there it is one stop to Harajuku, where the walk to Meiji Shrine passes under a torii built from 1,500-year-old cypress. The shrine grounds take about an hour at an unhurried pace.

Lunch lands wherever you want it to. If you asked for food-led, this is where the day tilts and the afternoon becomes a slower eating route through Ebisu or Shinjuku instead. Otherwise the Ginza line carries you east to Asakusa for the afternoon, arriving as the light softens on Senso-ji's main hall.

The tour ends wherever makes sense for your evening — your guide will point you at the right train and, if you want, book you a dinner table before saying goodbye.

Our 4 hour walking tour with Rika was incredible! She customized the itinerary to our interests and shared all her knowledge of Japan's history and modern culture. She pointed out places for us to grab snacks when we were hungry. She went above and beyond by spending an extra hour with us to complete our tour and provided us with additional recommendations for the rest of our stay in Japan. Could not recommend this tour with Rika enough!

Momo is a wonderful guide and we recommend her for visiting Tokyo and having a young local point of view on the city and Japanese culture. She is thoughtful and was great with our teenage boys and delighted us with a perfect sushi place!

Our guide, Ayuka, was brilliant. She took time ahead of the tour to contact us to learn about our interests and what we wanted to see. Then she recommended the best way to make that all happen and added great experiences we didn't know about. She's a great photographer and had good restaurant recommendations! Thank you!!

We had an absolutely great time with Asako! She met us at Hotel Hilton Tokyo Bay & started our activity from there. The communication before meeting my family was exceptional. It is our first time in Tokyo, & she took time to explain the train system at Tokyo station since it can be confusing. We visited classic temples & shrines throughout our tour, we visited duty free shopping areas, free observational tower, & ate great local cuisine dinner together. She guided us to Takeshita Market & Shibuya crossing where we had more fun taking pictures on the street. Unfortunately, time flies by & you will definitely have fun in an educational kind of way with Asako! She was the best. Thank you!

It was amazing! Many thanks to Satomi for this tour. Satomi not only took me to cool places near my neighborhood, but also helped me integrate into the world of Tokyo so that I would not be a stranger here. I am extremely grateful for your kindness and highly recommend the tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no fixed itinerary. Your guide starts by asking what you actually want out of Tokyo — neon and crowds, or quiet back lanes; a temple morning, or a day of eating — and builds the route around that. Because the group is only your party, you can slow down, skip a stop or sit down whenever you like.
Six hours, covering roughly 6–8 km on foot with train rides between districts. Tell us in advance if anyone in your group has mobility limits and the route will be rebuilt around lifts and shorter legs.
Yes, if you are staying in central Tokyo — otherwise you meet at the Hachiko statue outside Shibuya Station, which is easy to reach from anywhere on the Yamanote line.
Usually Shibuya Crossing from street level and above, Meiji Shrine inside its forest of about 100,000 hand-planted donated trees, Harajuku, and Senso-ji in Asakusa — the city's oldest temple, standing since 645. All of it is negotiable.
No — you pay your own train and subway fares, which usually comes to about ¥800–1,500 for a full day. Bring a charged Suica or Pasmo card; your guide will show you how the system works, which is a large part of the value on a first visit.
Yes, bring some. Japan is far more card-friendly than it used to be, but shrine offerings, small restaurants and older shops are still cash-only.
There is no strict code, but Senso-ji and Meiji Shrine are active places of worship, so shoulders covered is the respectful and safe choice. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes matter more — these are long days on foot.
