Full description
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a crossing rather than a destination. It climbs from the valley floor to the Murodo plateau at 2,450 metres using a chain of cable cars, ropeways and electric buses that run through the mountain, and the reason it is famous is what happens in spring: the road is cleared through snowpack up to twenty metres deep, leaving a corridor with walls of snow towering on both sides.
The route changes completely with the season. Snow walls from April into June. Clear high-alpine air and volcanic terrain through summer. From September into October, red and gold across the ridges — some of the earliest and most dramatic autumn colour in Japan, because at this altitude it turns weeks before the lowlands.
The practical case for going privately is the transit itself. The route is a multi-step chain with fixed timetables, separate tickets at several stages and queues that build fast in peak season, and getting it wrong costs hours. Your guide handles the scheduling and the on-site ticket purchases, navigates the transfers, and takes your photographs while you look at the mountains rather than at a departure board.
Hotel pickup and drop-off by private vehicle is included, along with every toll, parking fee and all fuel. The group is your own party, capped at seven.
Two departure points are offered: a Nagano round trip at twelve hours, or Matsumoto at eleven. Lunch is not included, and there are places to eat at the plateau. Weather at 2,450 metres is its own thing — bring a layer regardless of what the forecast says in the valley.

Great experience, and Chris was a fantastic guide. We couldn’t have navigated all the different parts of the Kurobe Route tour without him. We highly recommend this tour. Thanks Chris!
Our guide, Taketo, added so much to this day trip experience. His knowledge of the area and the activity locations was exceptional. In addition, his communication skills allowed for free and easy conversation. We highly recommend this activity with Taketo as your guide!!
We had a fantastic day out and our guide Kazu was very friendly and helpful.
I loved the experience, the views were amazing and the guides were taking good pictures of us the whole time. I was glad to book a guided tour as this route is stressfull to get to and do alone. Since we wanted to hike a bit more, the guides walked us through a little extra area which was nice. They also provided great food recommendations for Nagano following our trip.I do wish the price was inclusive of the entry to the parc, the whole experience felt a bit expensive overall.
Chris was fantastic!!!!!! He was informative knew the area and trail well. We would Recommend him In a heartbeat. We wish we had him for every tour. The scenery and weather was perfect we couldn’t have asked for a better day or company. Well done Chris hope to see you again some day and hope you enjoyed your Tim Tams.
Our guide Chris was super nice and helpful. He arrived at our hotel exactly on time and he took pictures through out the trip and sent them to us in the evening. The trip was great, we had good weather and the views were breathtaking with the early autumn leaves.
