Akihabara is close to unnavigable without help. It was the electronics district for fifty years and is now the centre of anime, manga and game culture in Japan, but the shops that matter are stacked vertically — eight floors of a building where each level sells something completely different, with nothing on the street to tell you which one you want.
A guide who follows this material solves that. The walk covers the multi-floor manga and anime stores, the retro game shops where the interesting stock is, and the specialist places that are effectively invisible to anyone who cannot read the signage. If you are hunting something specific, say so at the start; the guide will know which floor of which building to take you to.
The maid cafe is the part people ask about. It is the district's most-discussed institution and also its most misunderstood — the format is deliberately theatrical and family-friendly, closer to a themed diner with a stage show than anything else. The standard tour includes an hour there with a drink and a photograph. There is also an all-inclusive version with two hours in the cafe, a dessert and a live dance performance, and a walking-only version that skips the cafe entirely if it is not for you.
Groups cap at ten and the guide works in English. The route is wheelchair accessible. Merchandise is not included and you will want money for it — this is the district where restraint fails.
Meeting is in front of the ticket office just outside the Electric Town Gate of JR Akihabara Station, which is the exit you want and not the obvious one.

Excellent tour, going thru various stores, and alleyways. Helpful going into various stores with AC, as it was July in Tokyo, and very hot. Not much stairs, except 1 spot where we took an elevator up to 6th floor and walked slowly down 1 floor at a time looking at each item. Very manageable for older family members. We all enjoyed finding various anime merch, and seeing the local vibe. The guide got to know us, where we were from, and what kind of anime we liked so he could point it out in the various shops. Ayumi was an amazing guide for our Akihabara tour! She was incredibly knowledgeable about the area’s history, anime, gaming, and otaku culture, and she explained everything in a fun and engaging way.
