Mod Your Own Game Boy in Akihabara: Backlit IPS Screen and a Custom Shell in Tokyo

The original Game Boy's greatest weakness was its screen — a reflective LCD you had to angle towards a lamp, which is why the accessory market of the 1990s was full of clip-on lights. Thirty years later, a modern backlit IPS panel drops into the same shell and transforms the machine completely. This workshop lets you do that conversion yourself, in Akihabara, where the parts trade has always lived.

You choose your console at booking: the original DMG-01 from 1989, or the Game Boy Advance with its wider screen and much larger 32-bit library. Every unit is tested and verified before your session, so you are not troubleshooting somebody else's broken hardware.

The session is genuinely hands-on. You disassemble the console with your own hands, install the backlit IPS screen, swap the buttons, and fit a shell in a colour you pick — the whole point is that the finished object is unmistakably yours. English-speaking staff who actually care about this material walk you through every stage, and no technical experience is expected; most people arrive having never opened a piece of electronics.

There is a shelf of original cartridges to play on-site while you work, which is where a chunk of the session tends to go.

The group caps at six, and the workshop is on the seventh floor of a building in Kanda, minutes from Akihabara's main strip. It is not a cheap two hours, but you leave with a working, modified console rather than a photograph, and it will still work in twenty years.
