Full description

Asakusa is the right district to wear a kimono in. Senso-ji, the Nakamise shopping lane and the old streets behind them were built for the scale and pace of traditional dress, and enough locals do the same on festival days that you will not feel conspicuous.

The rental is a full set — the kimono or yukata itself, the obi belt, a Japanese clutch, sandals and socks — and it is yours for the day rather than an hour, which is the difference between a photo stop and actually spending your day dressed. Hair styling is included for women.

Kimono and yukata are not the same garment and the choice matters. A kimono is layered and worn year-round; a yukata is unlined, lighter and cooler, worn in summer, and available from June to September. If you book the yukata plan and change your mind on the day, you can switch to kimono for a small extra charge on site.

The photoshoot is optional but must be booked in advance — the studio cannot usually add it on the day. Shooting runs twenty minutes for one person, thirty for two, forty-five for three or more, outdoors in Asakusa. Each person receives fifteen edited photographs by download, adjusted for brightness and colour, with extras available to buy.

One practical note from the operator: garments fit up to 130 cm hip measurement. Check that before booking rather than on arrival.

The shop is on the fourth floor of a building near Asakusa Station's north exit on the Tobu Skytree Line — take the lift. Groups cap at six and the premises are wheelchair accessible.

It went very well! We arrived and could pick out our yukata. The workers there spoke good English and helped us get dressed and do our hair. With the photoshoot we went to a nearby temple and the person taking the photos picked out poses and places for me, which I found very nice.

Wonderful experience! The photographer brought me to several locations around Senso-Ji to get some amazing photos. The dressing assistant was very patient and made sure I looked perfect.

It was for my 77 year old mum, and she had a great time. The team were kind, professional and lovely. And the kimono was luscious. It was also deceptively close to the temple, only 3 mins (there’s a short cut). My only negative and it’s a very minor one is better signage. I initially missed the small sign outside and there was nothing further inside. Maybe a small sign on the wall or above the lift button? Otherwise it was wonderful.

Absolutely wonderful! Beautiful, nice quality kimono! They gave attention to detail, were skilled, and quick. They were exceptionally kind to me. The photographer showed me exactly how to pose. They gave me some time after the photoshoot to wonder before I had to return the kimono to the studio. I went to Nezu Shrine after the photoshoot which was a good choice. It's a beautiful shrine and has good shade. It's a bit hot wearing a kimono when the temperature is 28 degrees Celsius. I believe they offer other options for the summer though. The studio was on the 4th floor. I didn't know that but ended up finding it.
