Samurai and Ninja Museum in Asakusa: Guided Hour with Shuriken Throwing in Tokyo

Samurai and ninja are the two Japanese figures everyone arrives with an opinion about, and almost all of that opinion comes from film. This small museum in Asakusa exists to correct it, and the hour is well spent precisely because a guide walks you through rather than leaving you to read placards.

The collection is real equipment rather than props: armour, blades and the working tools of both trades, with the guide explaining what each piece was for and how it was actually used. The samurai story is the more surprising one for most visitors — a hereditary warrior class that spent long stretches of its history as bureaucrats and landholders rather than duellists, whose code was formalised largely after the fighting stopped. The ninja material is the opposite: far less romantic than the films suggest, closer to espionage and sabotage than acrobatics, and much of what people believe about it was invented in the twentieth century.

The part everyone remembers comes at the end. You throw shuriken — the star-shaped blades — at a target under instruction, and it is immediately obvious that the technique is nothing like the flick of the wrist you have seen on screen.

Groups cap at ten, which keeps it conversational, and the guide works in English. The entry ticket and the throwing session are both included in the price, so there is nothing extra at the door. It is wheelchair accessible.

At an hour and under thirty dollars it slots easily into an Asakusa morning alongside Senso-ji and Nakamise-dori, and it works particularly well with children, who tend to leave better informed than the adults expected.
