Sumo, Geisha and Chanko Hot Pot in Asakusa: Dinner Around a Real Dohyo in Tokyo

This is the one to book if you want sumo and dinner in the same two hours, and it is built around something most venues do not have: a real dohyo, the clay-and-rice-straw ring, set in the middle of the room with the tables arranged around it. You eat at the ringside rather than watching from a gallery.

The evening opens quietly. A geisha performs a traditional dance in full kimono, which sets a very different tone from the noise that follows — and gives you a rare chance to see the art form at close range without the cost and formality of a teahouse booking.

Then the sumo. The wrestlers are retired professionals, so the technique is real even though the stakes are not: they demonstrate the morning training routine, walk through the classic winning techniques, cover the etiquette and superstitions of the sport, and finish with a best-of-three bout. A bilingual moderator works in English and Japanese throughout, which is what makes the ritual legible rather than just loud. Guests can step into the ring and take on a wrestler afterwards, with places drawn by lottery when demand is high.

The food is chanko-nabe, the chicken hot pot that sumo stables eat by the vat to build and maintain weight. It is all-you-can-eat, served alongside other Japanese dishes, and one drink is included with more available to buy. You also leave with a printed photograph with the wrestlers and a souvenir set.

Three seating tiers exist. Standard seating at the main venue and at the annexe behind it both give a clear view; the VIP front row puts you at the edge of the ring. The venue is in Asakusa, on the basement floor of a building near Matsuya, which puts it a short walk from Senso-ji if you want to see the temple first.
