Full description

Ichikawa City Zoo is not on any Tokyo itinerary, and that is exactly its appeal. It is a small municipal zoo in Chiba, a short drive from the city, and the experience there is nothing like Ueno — no queues at every enclosure, no being moved along, and animals that are close enough to actually watch.

The zoo is a serious red panda institution. Thirteen live here, which is a significant proportion of Japan's captive population, and Ichikawa has become a leader in their conservation. They are the zoo's mascots and the enclosure is built around wooden climbing structures, so you see them doing what red pandas actually do rather than sleeping out of sight.

The other resident worth the trip is Punch-kun, a baby monkey who became internationally known for his attachment to a plush toy. Your guide tells the story of how he was raised and, more usefully, knows when and where he is likely to be visible.

For families there is the Nakayoshi Friendship Square, where the interaction with the animals is hands-on and supervised.

The day is deliberately unhurried — ten hours including transport from central Tokyo, with hotel pickup, guaranteed entry tickets and a group capped at five, so it never becomes a scrum. The guide works in English.

Lunch and souvenirs are your own. The zoo is wheelchair accessible, and this is one of the easier full days to do with small children, since the pace is set by your own group rather than a coach timetable.

Absolutely one of the best private tours we had in Japan! The driver was very polite, punctual, and spoke excellent English. The luxury vehicle was spotless and very comfortable throughout the trip. Amazing experience overal. Gama was a fantastic guide very calm, patient, and accommodating. He went the extra mile by offering us water, which was a thoughtful gesture. Everything was well organized, and we didn’t have to wait in line for tickets, which made the tour smooth and stress-free. Punch was adorable and definitely one of the best parts of the day The zoo was quite busy, but it didn’t affect our enjoyment.
