Full description
This is a 1.5-hour experience in Tokyo. It is run by Eva Kestner, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo is the largest city on earth by metropolitan population and it is best seen as a set of neighbourhoods on the Yamanote loop line rather than one place. Asakusa has Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, and Nakamise's shopping lane; Shibuya has the scramble crossing and Shinjuku the bars of Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho; Harajuku is Takeshita Street and Meiji Shrine's forest; Akihabara is electronics and anime; Ginza is department stores and sushi counters. Everything runs on time and the last trains are around midnight. Cash still matters in small restaurants, an IC card covers every train and bus, and tipping is not done anywhere.
The price covers 90-minute taiko drumming workshop, Foundation training, Rhythm training, Learning of a traditional and contemporary taiko drumming and Demonstration performance by Eva. It does not cover Please bring comfortable clothing and a water bottle, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Eva Kestner sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Eva Kestner before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

What’s great experience. It’s authentic and feels great to do. Eva is a great teacher who paces things to what you can do and is a lot of fun just to hang out with. I’d recommend this to anyone regardless of whether you have any drumming or musical experience!
Ava is a wonderful teacher. The lesson was packed with content and the techniques were demonstrated very clearly and with patience. It was also a lot of fun learning new rhythms and then being able to put it all together to make a couple of videos with Ava which I got to keep on a private YouTube. A lovely Japanese musical & cultural experience. I’m so glad I booked to do this experience and throughly recommend it.
This was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I genuinely recommend this activity to everyone. It was such a great class with an amazing instructor – Eva is an incredible artist and teacher. She is incredibly passionate, so good at teaching, very kind, and explains everything so clearly. I was choosing between this and another activity, and I’m so glad I made the right choice. This is not a tourist trap – it’s a proper class run by a real artist. We learned a historical, regional piece using two different types of drums. The class is very well organised, clear, and super fun! It was a 5
We had a wonderful time! The teacher was energetic and patient and created a very fun environment. One tiny watch out is that it gets v loud, so if anyone is sensory sensitive, bring headphones or earplugs!
Soooo much fun. We managed 2 pieces in our session. To assist us further it would have been good to have a written plan to follow as my poor brain couldn’t keep up. I’ve been playing djembes for around 15 years - going to look into Taiko when I get home. Thought I’d be stiff but the workout release all the tightness in my neck and back. Good vibrations helped. Eva accommodated my limited mobility which I appreciated Highly recommend.
It was such a great experience and an unexpected bit of a workout! Eva was so good and knowledgeable. You can see her passion for taiko through her teaching. The time just flew by. I could have done it all day. Definitely good fun and a good focus technique vs another class I did. I also liked the recording of sessions so I can go home and practice my form. Highly recommended and would do it again next trip. Thanks Eva!
We had a great time learning Taiko drum skills with Eva today. In our 90 minute session we went through everything from how to hold the drum sticks, different sets of drum beat rhythms and even a paired performance involving different beats and poses for each person in a pair. We completed two different performances in this time, one of which was the start of a real traditional Taiko drum performance which is originally from one of the islands near Tokyo. Overall it was a fun and exciting experience which I would definitely recommend. Thanks Eva!
It was extremely interactive, very informative . The instructor was perfect . I highly recommend this activity to be done with family, and it is a must do when you come to Tokyo.
Eva kestner was awesome! You could tell she was experienced and a great performer as well as teacher. She led a high energy and dynamic class. We moved quickly through different rhythms so it really felt like you had experienced a lot by the end. And Eva chose a fun piece for us to perform at the end that involved switching on and off the drum which was quite fun. Hot tip: be ready to sweat and consider wearing shorts - the room got warm!
This was the best experience and I would do it again if I’m back in Tokyo. Eva the trainer was so good at teaching, and I felt very inspired after finishing the session.
My brother and I had a really great time. We especially enjoyed the mix of nice rhythms and a bit of athleticism while also learning some interesting cultural backrounds of Taiko. Eva did a very good job, had great energy and was really nice.
Amazing experiance and what a powerful teacher Eva. You can feel her energy which she has in playing the drums. We can highly recommend it. Even nicer with family making some music together and have a nice recorded memory . 🎉🎉🙏🙏💃💃
